It had been a relatively peaceful summer. Up until people started dying off mysteriously. An entire section of the town had been blockaded and quarantined, but it didn't seem to stop the people stuck on the inside from dying off, even though they never set foot outside. The police kept a constant watch on the neighborhood, and although they had to stay calm for the sake of everyone else, it was clear they too were quite nervous. In all likelihood, they probably knew what was going on but were powerless to stop whatever the cause was.Within the rest of the city, people were near panic, and of course the media covering the events didn't help.

She quickly shut off the radio. She could hear her little brother enter the room with a few of his play things. He of all people didn't need to hear about the events of the past month. He went outside and began to play with his action figures. He was only five or six. Not much older then that. Sam grinned as one of his toys made a funny sounding noise. A top his freckled head lay a mop of curly red hair. He was average build for a first grader, tiny. He looked normal...except for his eyes. They were dead. He could see perfectly fine, but his eyes looked as if he had no soul...no hope nothing. Like he was just living behind a mask. Which he was. He was an empath, but knew of no means to protect himself. The terror and panic of the people caused him to be sick most days. "now batman...." He cooed in his child-voice. His apartment was safe, even though they were close to the danger.

There had been rumors of a strange man wandering the streets, and all the media had covered the speculation on whether there was a link to his appearance and the many deaths. It seemed likely, if not for any other reason than that always seemed to be nearby when someone died from this mysterious cause. The police really had set up the blockade to keep people away from him, that was obvious to anyone who could put two and two together. They definitely knew something about this strange man.

The boy, Sam, set down his toys. He felt like he should go to the streets. Don't ask him why, but his little mind was fixated on going to the streets. So of course that is exactly what he did. Only he brought his older sister with him.She held his hand in her gloved hand and they walked. She said nothing, just let him lead. Sam pulled her along, he was laughing at something. That confused her. It really did. Why should he be laughing? Maybe he felt something new? She had no idea. The girl was confused.

The blockade was not that far away. A few blocks at most. Where this strange man was, now that was a mystery. He seemed to disappear and reappear in a completely different location, but he never crossed the blockade. It was like he was toying with them, knowing he could leave at any time, and just playing with their fear, popping up in random locations withing the blockade to scare the officers.

Sam stopped in front of the blockade. He looked at his sister and answered her thought. "Because" He said simply. She shook her head, a firm no, "I don't wanna leave" He said in protest. He looked at her and sighed loudly "Batman would go check it out" He said in that way little kids do. She rolled her eyes.

One of the officers glanced over at them "you shouldn't be here. its too dangerous." He informed them, as if they didn't already know. But that was his job, after all, maintaining the blockade and making sure no one got in. It obviously wasn't there to keep the guy in, he could probably escape it with ease.

"No' the boy said "I don't wanna" He said to the officer. His sister shrugged as if to say, 'well he knows what's safe and what isn't.' The boy tugged on his sisters hand "Sis! Sis!" He said. She looked down. "Someone alive is in there" He said proudly. She nodded, She didn't know for sure. She had to believe him though. He was right about those things. She looked to the officer.

The officer looked at his partner, who shrugged. Technically they couldnt let them in, and they couldnt go in themselves. But this small child seemed to be unique, and they didnt have anything else to go on. "alright. im not supposed to let you in, so no one finds out about this. got that?" he sighed. "and your on your own, i cant come after you if something happens."

Sam nodded and pulled his sister past the barricade with him. He started off in some direction. Eventually he slowed down. the sight before him amazed him, it overwhelmed him. He started to cry. Sam didn't know this emotion. He knew of it. But he did not know it. He knew it now. His sister picked him up. She held him tightly. She did not know what else to do. The girl rubbed his back. "No, I wanna stay" he said firmly through his tears. He had to stay.

The sight would overwhelm anyone. There were bodies collapsed in the streets as if they had just up and died while they were walking. There was no sign of violence anywhere, except they were all dead. A car wreck had happened this way as well, with several cars piled up with dead drivers inside. No survivors. Anyone left alive in the area had locked themselves in their homes and closed the windows.

The boy whimpered and then wriggled from his sisters arms. She set him on the ground. Sam took her hand and they walked along. She was shocked that he wanted to be here. The scene before them frightened even her. She tried to look away but there was no escape. "I know someone is here" He said in protest of her actions. She looked at him, "I just don't know where" He continued softly.

He was right. That strange man was there. After a while of wandering they came across him. He had his back turned at first, but from what they could see he was about 5'6", with long brown hair, and was wearing a trenchcoat.
The man laughed, he knew they were there. It amused him that someone would be brave enough to actually come looking for him.

There was a fine, very very fine that is, line between bravery and stupidity. Sam's sister thought they had simply jumped passed it. Still, despite her silent protests, Sam wouldn't give up. He had to find this man. "I know he's near sis" the boy said for what seemed like the millionth time

Without turning, he spoke. His voice was cold, calculating,"looking for me." It was a statement more then a question. He laughed again, an usettling laugh that could only be evil. "how bold...and foolish."
